A series of Wednesday evening termly workshops lead by local furniture maker Nick Kary. Aimed at anyone wanting to build a relationship with wood, and develop a comfort and set of skills with which to tackle a wide variety of projects.

The course will run over a year’s period, broken up into 3 terms. It can be taken by the term, but the full benefit will be gained over a full year. It is for anyone, whether they have experience or not. Green woodworking techniques will initially be learnt to develop an easy relationship with hand tools and wood. These will act as a sound base from which to explore joinery techniques, hand planing, shaping and polishing over the full year. Machine tool use will be covered in terms 2 and 3, but the main emphasis will be on developing competency with hand tools.

Nick’s workshop is set among beech trees on a hill overlooking the sea between Totnes and Dartmouth. Built by Phil, Nick and Nick 11 years ago it is a 1000sq ft building heated by waste sawdust and the burning joy of making. It has a fully equipped machine shop and large workbench and hand tool area. All tools are supplied, but I will encourage each participant to gradually collect their own.

You will find the course dates to your left.
